Children and Conversational Postulates

Many times when I am working with parents and children, I am asked how effective is NLP with children. My answer, NLP is very effective when working with children, if the adult is prepared to calibrate, test, re-calibrate, test, laugh, laugh, and learn.

Each child is unique, think about fingerprints, no two sets are alike, and yet many people think that what works with one child will surely work with all children.

NLP is not a thing, it is based on observation, curiosity, guessing and then testing, sometimes through trial and error. Children are masters at flexibility. If they want something, they will continuously and creatively modify their behavior until they either get what they want, or discover something else to focus their attention on. The younger the child the easier they can be distracted.

So the bottom line is, the adult must have more flexibility of behavior to keep up with the child. And please remember, behavior can change quickly and easily.

Child also have very good memories. Most ADD children have amazingly precise memories. Unfortunately, many adults have little appreciation for the precise memory of what was said, and react to the childs frustration, instead of simply acknowledging and responding.

An explain of a conversation postulate would be I feel a draft, is the front door open? A likely adult response to this issomeone gets up and checks the door. A likely child response is I dont know, it wasnt open when I walked past it. Or I closed it when I came in. Followed by a look at someone else.

Now here is what I find amusing. Although most people are completely unaware of conversational postulates, they are all around us, and we have been taking for granted the natural response, to a point where many of us, have come to count on the response. Somebody else gets up and checks the door, oven, thermostat, time etc. But what happens when what we expect doesnt happen and we have to take action ourselves?

The adult gets confused, and then annoyed, because what they expected to happen didnt. Time for a change. Test the questions, and be prepared to get the answer for yourself. If you arent getting the response you expected, laugh and move on. There is still so much children can teach us, enjoy the learning!

Importance Of Preschool Development For Your Child

When children reach the age of three, they essentially embark upon a very crucial part of their lives. They meet people and participate in activities that will have a profound effect on them, thereby making the need for preschool development even more important.

Given the sensitive and curious nature of children at such a tender age, providing proper preschool development to them is no longer an option, rather it is required. This article will highlight some of the benefits of this approach in order to emphasize its importance to parents. Any parents debating the benefits of sending their child to preschool will also find this article very useful.

1. Encouragement to Speak Your Mind

One key indicator of good child development and growth is the childs ability to communicate and speak his/her mind. Many children are shy to speak at first. Parents and teachers should play a leading role and take the first step in getting the child to open up. This requires that the child be completely comfortable with the surrounding and the people in it. Aside from home, Montessori schools are an ideal place for a child to develop and improve their communication.

2. Emphasis on Interaction

A child learns invaluable lessons at home. It is arguably the best education institution early on. However its potential is limited. Children are always comfortable at home. They need to be exposed to the outside world and be given ample opportunities to communicate and interact with people who are not part of the household. Preschool development revolves around this school of thought.

3. Learning the Importance of Teamwork

Children are paired in teams and groups where they learn to work together and understand the importance of teamwork. This serves as a means to improve their communication and interaction with their peers as well as their teachers.

4. Acquiring Good Learning Habits

An integral part of good preschool development is to create a desire in children to learn. In order to do so, preschools implement numerous programs designed to make learning more appealing and to motivate children to better themselves as students and human beings. Children can get bored very easily so the learning activities must be fun and entertaining.

5. Significance of a Healthy Body

A healthy body makes for a healthy mind. This is particularly true for children. Preschool development doesnt entail restricting children only to indoor learning activities. A significant emphasis is given to outdoor activities that are bundled nicely with indoor tasks in order to give children the perfect balance of learning and fun.

These above mentioned reasons are more than plenty to convince any parent about the importance of preschool development for their child. Adequate attention, ample learning opportunities, healthy recreational activities and freedom to express at will are the basic principle of this concept. Proper implantation of these principles in any child will bring about noticeable results in the future.

Kids Vs. Cooperation Four Ways To Get Them To Listen To You!

How many times have you said, “Don’t do that” only to have your youngster continue rocking back on the dining room chair? There are four errors with that statement. Let’s consider each tip individually.

1.Be Positive – If you want your young children to cooperate, you need to inform them precisely what you wish them to do, rather than what you don’t want them to do. Don’t and can’t are invisible commands. Kids only hear what comes after. Therefore, they translate “Don’t rock back on the chair” into “Rock back on the chair.”

2.Be Precise – When you said, “Don’t do that,” your youngster doesn’t know what you mean by “that.” It could mean rocking on the chair, chewing his gum, or teasing his sister. When you want to prevent inappropriate behavior, you must let the kids know precisely what form of conduct you expect. Here’s a positive alternative with precise information: “Put your chair down so all four legs stay on the ground.” Now junior is aware of what you want.

3.Add a reason – Certainly, he understands what you want, but he doesn’t know why it’s in his best interest to obey. To a kid, a parental request sounds like a dictatorship. Unless you offer an explanation, your youngster will continue to disobey. Add this sentence to your request: “So you don’t crack your head open after you fall.”

4.Add humor – Up to now, you’ve instructed your youngster what to do in a specific manner while providing a reason to obey. When you add humor, your child laughs, and the happy endorphins generate a message in his brain that says your request is acceptable to him. Add the last part of the sentence: “So you don’t crack your head open after you fall like Humpty Dumpty.”

So there you’ve got it, an effective way to get your little ones to cooperate. It’s no secret that when kids understand what you want and why you want it, told in a pleasant manner, they don’t have any option but to comply! (Well, almost always!)

Teaching Little Kids To Be Fair And Honest

Teaching little kids fairness and honesty is important. Dont wait until they are old enough to learn good values. Teach them those qualities as early as possible so that will be accustomed to practice those qualities. We have some tips for you which are quite easy to do.

If you want to teach your children, the first thing you have to do is to give them example. Dont just tell them what to do. Children learn more from what they see. They will imitate what their parents do. To teach them fairness and honesty, you have to promote those values as often as possible. They might not understand the terms of fairness and honesty. That is why you have to show them the times fairness and honesty should be exhibited. Once more, live with these values if you want your children have those qualities. They will follow the way you live and behave. You can tell them your story when you were honest and fair to someone else. It is better to give them understanding that being fair and honest can be advantageous that they will be more interested to practice.

Dont forget to give your children the rules of being fairness and honesty. You can use your creativity to promote the values through an attractive poster. Ask your children to help you make the poster. Use some pictures showing fairness and honesty. Or, you may stick some colorful and eye-catching cut-out letters to the poster. Put it in your childrens bedroom so that they can see it everyday. They will also remember those values since they are involved in making the poster. They will like to read it since some part of it is their work. They are proud of it and practice as what it says.

Make such a role-playing between you and your children. You can use their dolls or puppets. Make a dialogue of a situation in which they are demanded to decide what is right to do. You can make a situation in which you have to tell the truth, for example when you unintentionally break a vase in the living room. Tell them that the truth is better than you say that the cat did it.

Those are tips to teach your children fairness and honesty. We hope that it will be useful for you.

How to Supervise an Employee with Low Self-Esteem

How to Supervise an Employee with Low Self-Esteem Yesterday, one of my subordinates made a small mistake in a procedure she was coding. I asked her why she made, without any intention of accusing her. I was expecting her to come up with the response that she had either forgotten the correct procedure or she would find a better way to do it in the future. At the time, I was genuinely seeking an opportunity to teach her the correct way to do the procedure.

But to my surprise, she came up with a response -I am a fool and perhaps that’s why it happened-. I was astonished at this answer as it not only belittled herself; it did so in front of a senior.

I controlled myself and told her that she should not think that way and saying that she is a fool doesn’t explain what happened. Once again, she repeated that she was a fool and perhaps she was too foolish to have performed the coding procedure at all. By saying this, she shut down all avenues for improvement and ignored my willingness to help her. Nevertheless, I told her that -You’re not a fool and maybe you should just talk to your reviewer-.

That incident still sticks in my mind because I felt like a jerk. I had a feeling that I made her feel bad. On the other hand, I was feeling manipulated because her excuse of stupidity meant that she lacked the capability to learn anything.

This was one of the examples of an employee’s low self esteem that affected her work. Employees with low self esteem can present many challenges to a company. It is difficult for a company to maintain productivity and quality output from employees with swinging moods and negative attitudes. Even without consciously meaning to, managers stop believing in these employees and thus begins a cycle that revolves round distrust, low performance and failure.

It is important for an organization to build the professional reputation or esteem of its employees. Employees with high self esteem are more productive, motivated, committed and are simply more motivated. They have more productive relationships with other coworkers and are able to accept criticism gracefully.

Professional self esteem can be defined as the belief of each employee in his/her competence and that they have all the necessary skills to perform their job. How to Handle Employees with Low Self Esteem
